A little soul-searching...

What is your reaction to these questions? What are some of your answers? Honestly, these kinds of questions freak me out a little...

• What’s my purpose in life?
• What dreams do I have for my life?
• What am I doing now to reach my goal?
• What really excites me?
• Where do I spend my time?
• Where do I spend my money? What do I like to give to?
• Am I really living life on purpose, or merely letting life happen to me?

Um ya know those were some very selfish questions. All about self. Don;t get me wrong they are very valid questions. But in my current walk I have been so convicted of self, that it hurts. Only that is why I said those were selfish questions.

Yeah.. these type of questions sort of make you cringe, huh? The type of soul searching I don't like to do, but need to do...

The questions are diagnostic and serve, I think, a useful purpose in getting us to do a little self-examination. I don't think they're selfish, but they are intended to be self-focused. As a means to an end---whether that be helping to determine where God may be directing us to focus our energies and gifts, or illuminating a wrong focus/perspective in how we spend or energies.

I think what bothers me most about them is that I realize my lack of passion or ambition for anything that really matters or makes a difference. In theory I'm all about certain things, but I don't usually purpose to set and achieve goals for myself. It's probably mostly an issue of laziness. Or fear of failure. Or something... These questions show me that I'm more the person who lets life happen to them, rather than living on purpose.

I got the questions from the sample chapter of a new book advertised in Relevant magazine's weekly email and the whole book is about finding purpose. Christ has given us a purpose and called us to many tasks, so living purposelessly makes no sense...but yet it's an easy default mode.

Sorry if I came off harsh or anything with my first comment. It took a while to process through it al and I came to a better epace with things.

Self-focus is a good thing at times and I let my own self focus rule over everythign including my comment from earlier.

But my small lesson learned in the self-focus I forgot to see at hand God at work and let all the questions overpower his work.

• What’s my purpose in life? To serve God and others.

• What dreams do I have for my life? I want a house and a family. Nothing too outrageous, just a life filled with love and contentment and opportunities to reach out to people.
• What am I doing now to reach my goal? Praying. Saving. More praying.
• What really excites me? Ultimate frisbee, people who are passionate about their faith
• Where do I spend my time? At work a lot lately, but also I like to read at home and of course watch TV!
• Where do I spend my money? I eat out too much. But a lot of my money goes on bills. What is left over I save and then spend on entertainment.

What do I like to give to? Missionaries.

• Am I really living life on purpose, or merely letting life happen to me. I am living life on purpose. I am attacking it each day and making the most of it.

Wow, such good questions because they take us out of our comfort zone of just being in the moment and doing what we want. They are hard for me because it makes me really look at who I am and what I desire to do, not just what I'm able but what my heart yearns for. I think I struggle more admitting what my dreams are and taking that chance to follow them. These are also perfect for me right now with all the transitioning going on in my life. Thanks for making me think and do a little bit of heart investigation.

I think I can answer all of them with:

Following God
