One of my favorites...

This is, I think, my favorite cut off of the most recent Nickel Creek album, Why Should the Fire Die?. It's tragic and beautiful and the melody is kind of haunting. And it resonates with me.

Tryin' on a brand new dress
But you haven't worn the old one yet
You've come too far
To turn around now

You've given up the good fight
You're as strong as anyone
You're back where you started from
I see you're back where you started from

Starin' down the stars
Jealous of the moon
You wish you could fly
Just being where you are
There's nothin' you can do
If you're too scared to try

Drag your pretty head around
Swearin' you're gonna drown
With a beautiful sigh
And a river of lies

Starin' down the stars
Jealous of the moon
You wish you could fly
Just stayin' where you are
There's nothin' you can do
If you're too scared to try

Why don't you call me, I could save you
Together we'll find a God we can pray to
That'll take you by the hand

I hate to see a friend of mine
Laughing out loud
When she's crying inside
But you've got your pride

Starin' down the stars
Jealous of the moon
You wish you could fly
But you're stayin' where you are
There's nothin' you can do
If you're too scared to try

Thile wrote that one with one of the head writer/performers of another great band (the Jayhawks), a guy named Gary Louris.

Great song from a great record. Go Creek!

How true! From time to time, I learn it's worth going beyond one's comfort zone.

Yeah so I still haven't indulged and purchased that cd yet... but I did get to here my favorite tune from it, Can't Complain. I also like your comment about the watermark cd, "whether or not you like the style or polished production." Smiles

This is a bizarre change of emotional content from the previous post, Miss King. But I concur; it's one of my favorites. Maybe you could do a "You might be NC-obsessed if..." I did one tonight when Daniel talked about the apostle Thomas's nickname. And I KNOW Gilles would qualify.

You know that's right. "Doubting Thomas" is such a great song. It's so true, so authentic.

"Can't Complain" is a great song but it is much better in concert and on bootleg CD's than on the WSTFD CD (btw, Nickel Creek encourages fans to record live shows and they have a policy about it on their website).

You know the "jump" part of the song, where they've being doing the refrain lighter and lighter and then he stops singing, only to pick up seconds later, yelling "She can't complain" like a banshee? Well, it's much more pronounced and makes a much bigger impact in concert. My brother gave me a bootleg CD that has an excellent version. That part of the song is simply scary. You know it's coming -- he's gonna suddenly explode with the refrain. But even knowing it's coming, it catches you unaware and makes you pee your pants.
